Dodecahydron Tea Strainer
On perusing the internet earlier today I came across this incredible piece of workmanship by Arnold Patrick Martin – A US metal smith whose other works are well worth a gander.
I don’t think it can be bought as I think its a custom-built piece but I would absolutely love to own one of these. I can imagine Victorian England and Edgar Alan Poe all catapulted to a post apocalyptic world where tea is sold on the black market as a life enhancing herb. This is quite possibly one of the best pieces of tea-art I’ve seen since starting this blog.

Its a tiresome myth that I oft hear peddled by the organic lobbyists that bleach in teabags health risks are many and horrifying. I’ve heard everything from burned throats to cancerous growths. Stomach ulcers and sudden and painful death.
Although it’s true that most tea bags go through a process of bleaching during their manufacture they do not retain any bleach in the tea bag when it comes to brewing your next cup of tea.
Far worse than bleach in teabags health risks is the sorry state of your taste buds upon their assault by the papery tainted aroma of your tea. Green tea especially suffers from being bagged due to its delicate taste and you’ll often find cheaper teas will put floor sweepings and other low quality leaf crud into their bags.
That isn’t to say all bagged tea is bad – I myself drink bagged tea 50% of the time. Sheer convinience demands it in my busy life. At the office I drink Yorkshire tea by the bag and quite adequate it is too. If you’re to get bagged tea then make sure its a quality tea. For the office I’d recommend Clipper Fairtrade or Yorkshire.

With the ongoing reports in the news about green living and reminders to save water, electricity, fuel, heat, etc. I thoguht I’d shout a quick tip to tea drinkers to help with that.
It’s often said you should use fresh water for every cup. Now this is due to the water loosing oxygenation after boiling and its true. However! Its very hard to use exactly the right amount of water for each cup or pot so there’s always some left over which gets thrown away next time round.
That’s not necessary – adding a little fresh water to top up the ‘old’ water helps to re-oxygenate that water and no falvour is lost at all – so next time you want a fresh cup just add a bit to recharge the water and save the planet.
