Drink Tea to Cool

September 11th, 2007

I don’t normally rubbish the claims of tea but this was a juicy urban myth I felt okay toruncing.  You may have heard the old wives tale of drinking a hot cup of tea to cool down?

Well its not true!!

The idea behind it was that when you driunk the hot tea you’ll sweat and that will cool you.  Now while its true that may happen that’s no guaruntee you’ll cool your body down.  As your body has a very determined internal temperature that varies very, very little.  It’d take a whole lot more than a cup of tea to cool you or heat you significantly.  That sweating and flushing you may get will only be enough to cool you to the level you’re at – keeping you static in the long run.

Urban myth exploded!!

If you’re hot – open a window!

Tea & Facism

September 4th, 2007

I’m not sure whether tea was popular during Second World War Germany but you’d never think of tea as being the kind of drink to stir ideals of facism and totalitarianism. However, just that is stirring over at a shop called Tea Cosy in Brighton. You can read more about it at the Telegraph website: Tea Cosy Facist Nightmare.

Orlando Bloom Ditches Green Tea

November 22nd, 2005

…because of a back injury.
He was recently quoted as saying:

“I was drinking green tea, which has caffeine. Not an awful lot. Just enough to get me through the shoot.”

“By the end of the night, my back was killing me. It (caffeine) dehydrates your spine and my back – that’s still my alarm. That’s my canary in the mine shaft.”

This is in relation to his accident falling off a ladder many moons ago.

A Drinker Gets the Greenlight

November 14th, 2005

Tyroan Wallace over at his blog has finally discovered the way to make a proper cup of green tea. After making the cardinal mistake of brewing it too long:

when i made it b4 just thru the stuff in walked for a minute or 2 maybe even 5 min came back and drank it when i made it like that it was gross. i read the box and followed what it said and it is pretty good .

For anoyone not in the know there’s a number of golden rules with green tea:

  • A smaller brewing time than black tea – Green tea is delicate and if left for too long can be overpowering
  • Don’t have too much tea – this is an easy mistake to make especially if its loose leaf.
  • Green tea takes the ‘first boil’ - Contrary to popular belief this isn’t the number of times boiled but the point of the boil. First boil is when the kettle is just about to start boiling and bubbling. Second boil is during the boil and third is after the boil. Green tea is delicate and the flavour easily impaird by over-boiling so a first boil is the one to go for.

Tea Losing Out to Coffee

October 1st, 2005

Unfortunately the UK is turning American in its shift towards instant coffees over teas. Although PG Tips have recently unleashed a product called PG-2-Go which aims to appeal to the speedy generation of coffee drinkers by offering a small cup with a retractable tea bag. Personally I think its a travesty. Tea is tea – not coffee.

Boston Tea Party

February 22nd, 2005

I was doing my usual tea based research recently and came across a quite horrifying find!
Now I’m aware a number of ‘partys’ were had in America during the colony era but I never knew that anyone would stoop so low as to have a Tea Party!!

Now for those who don’t know. The Boston Tea Party of 1773 was an event in which a number of American ‘patriots’ boarded a ship of the East Indian company and threw all of the tea onboard into the sea!! When I read this I was literally moved to tears. To think all of that tea mercilessly dropped into the ocean left to rot in COLD dark waters, possibly being nipped at by fish with no respect for teas natural beurty and essence. Clearly something you’d expect from a land of coffee drinkers and rebels.

The Boston Tea Party has quite clearly got to be one of the most tragic events of the 18th Century.

Now although the reason for the Boston tea party’s occurence is quite inconsequential, I suppose an explanation is worth giving, however I am not the best story teller so I shall borrow a quote from a nice site you can find here

“The Boston Tea Party was a reaction to the Tea Act of 1773 that was passed by Parliament to save the British East India Company from bankruptcy. The Tea Act essentially eliminated all taxes on tea except the three pence Townshend tax. More importantly, it offered Americans tea at a lower price than that of the colonial smugglers. Hence, the British East Indian Company would be saved from bankruptcy, the colonial smugglers would be out of business, and the principle of parliamentary taxation would be upheld.”

Now I dont know about you but I don’t feel that is a good enough excuse to vandalise such a wonderful, almost omnipotent plant that provides such joy for millions of people worldwide.

I shall light a candle for the lost tea and I shall begin campaigning here in the UK for sanctions to be placed on the US for such a brutal display towards tea.
